Richard E. Bowen Sr.
Richard E. Bowen, Sr, 89, of York died Wednesday, August 23, 2017 at The Brunswick at Longstown. He was the husband of Ella Lou (Doll) Bowen. They celebrated their 67th wedding anniversary on August 9th.
Born June 12, 1928 in New Cumberland, he was the son of the late George L. Bowen, Sr. and Esther E. (Bair) Bowen.
Richard was a veteran of the U.S. Army serving during the Korean War.
Richard retired from York Suburban Senior High School where he had been a Health and Phys. Ed teacher. He was a former athletic director and the head baseball coach and assistant football coach at York Suburban. He also taught and coached at New Cumberland High School.
Richard was a graduate of New Cumberland High School where he was a standout athlete in football, basketball, and baseball. He also graduated from West Chester College and received his Master’s Degree from Penn State University. He also took additional graduate studies at Millersville State College and West Chester College. Richard was a member and Elder of Eastminster Presbyterian Church. He was also a member of the York County Retired Teachers Association, Pennsylvania State Retired School Employees, the JCC, and the Harrisburg Senators Fan Club. In 1986, he was inducted into the West Shore Chapter of the Pennsylvania Sports Hall of Fame.
In addition to his wife, he is also survived by 2 sons, Richard E. Bowen, Jr. and his wife, Kathy of Greensburg, PA and Ronald E. Bowen and his wife, Leslie of Bel Air, MD; 7 grandsons, Brett (Courtney), Andy (Jen), Matt (Kaitlin), Stephen (Maria), Mickey, Kevin (Cory), and Brian; a granddaughter, Sammy; and 3 great grandchildren, Brooks, Kylie, and Jack. He was preceded in death by 2 brothers, Paul R. Bowen and George L. Bowen, Jr. and a sister, Fay L. Cramer.
Funeral Services will be held Tuesday, August 29, 2017 at 11:00 a.m. at Eastminster Presbyterian Church, 311 Haines Road, York with his pastor, the Rev. Dr. Gregory Seckman, officiating. Viewings will be held Monday, August 28, 2017 from 6:00-8:00 p.m. and Tuesday from 10-10:45 a.m. both at the church. Burial will be in Mount Rose Cemetery with graveside military rites conducted by the York County Veterans Honor Guard.
