John S. Clevenstine
John S. Clevenstine, 79, of York, passed on to be with his Heavenly Father on January 30, 2017 at York Hospital. He was surrounded by his family and was completely at peace. He was the husband of Joyce E. (Ginder) Clevenstine; together they celebrated 27 years of marriage. Born in Zion, Centre County, on February 5, 1937, he was the son of the late Paul Shaeffer and Grace Elizabeth (Smeltzer) Clevenstine.
John’s service in the U.S. Air Force was a source of tremendous pride and began a lifelong love of airplanes and aviation.
John enjoyed a successful career in various aspects of the trucking industry. For 25 years, he served in various sales management positions for the Carrier Corporation’s transit refrigeration division, retiring in 1999.
John was a long time member of the First Presbyterian Church of York. He served as an Elder there for many
years and his faith in his Savior formed an important part of his life right until the very end.
He was also a member of the BPOE Bellefonte, played golf year-round, and remained active at the JCC gym with regular early morning workouts. Always outgoing, he made friends wherever he went and constantly looked for ways to help those around him.
In addition to his wife, he is survived by two sons Roy Lars Clevenstine and his wife Karen of York, John P. Lukens, III and his wife Kathleen of Reading, MA; two daughters Michelle E. Porter and her husband Scott of York, Debra L. Hoffman and her husband Paul of Pottstown; ten grandchildren and three great grandsons; a brother Charles O. Clevenstine of York and a sister Norma J. Young of Beccaria. He was preceded in death by his brother, Robert P. Clevenstine of Zion, PA.
A memorial service will be held on Saturday, February 4th at 3:00 pm at the First Presbyterian Church of York, 225 East Market Street, York with a visitation beginning at 2:00 pm in The Gathering Place.
